Pinpointing the jet apex of 3C 84

چکیده

Nearby radio galaxies that contain jets are extensively studied with VLBI, addressing jet launching and the physical mechanisms at play around massive black holes. 3C 84 is unique in this regard, because combination of its proximity large SMBH mass provides a high spatial resolution to resolve complex structure base. For an angular scale 50 ${\mu}$as corresponds 200 - 250 Schwarzschild radii ($R_s$). Recent RadioAstron VLBI imaging 22 GHz revealed east-west elongated feature northern end jet, which challenges interpretations. Here we propose instead apex not located within core region but more upstream jet. We base our arguments on 2D cross-correlation analysis quasi-simultaneously obtained images 15, 43, 86 GHz, measures opacity shift 84. With assumption power law index ($k_r$) being set 1, find be $83 \pm 7$ north (upstream) core. Depending assumptions for $k_r$ particle number density n, mixed toroidal/poloidal magnetic field configuration, consistent offset from central engine by about 400-1500 $R_s$. The measured then used estimate strength, amounts B = 1.80 4.0 G near discuss some implications these findings.

The Global Jet Structure of the Archetypical Quasar 3C 273

A key question in the formation of the relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is the collimation process of their energetic plasma flow launched from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Recent observations of nearby low-luminosity radio galaxies exhibit a clear picture of parabolic collimation inside the Bondi accretion radius. On the other hand, little is known of the obser...

The trails of superluminal jet components in 3C 111

In 1996 a major radio flux density outburst occurred in the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 111. It was followed by a particularly bright plasma ejection associated with a superluminal jet component, which has shaped the parsec-scale structure of 3C 111 for almost a decade. Here we present results from 18 epochs of Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations conducted since 1995 as part of the VLBA...

X-ray Emission from the Radio Jet in 3c 120

We report the discovery of X-ray emission from a radio knot at a projected distance of 25′′ from the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy, 3C 120. The data were obtained with the ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI). Optical upper limits for the knot preclude a simple power law extension of the radio spectrum and we calculate some of the physical parameters for thermal bremsstrahlung and synchrotron sel...

Probing the Parsec-scale Accretion Flow of 3c 84 with Millimeter Polarimetry

We report the discovery of Faraday rotation toward radio source 3C 84, the active galactic nucleus in NGC1275 at the core of the Perseus Cluster. The rotation measure (RM), determined from polarization observations at wavelengths of 1.3 and 0.9 mm, is (8.7± 2.3)×10 rad m−2, among the largest ever measured. The RM remained relatively constant over a 2 year period even as the intrinsic polarizati...
